Nature vs. Nurture

Nature vs. Nurture is a polemical term that refers to the origin of an individuals psychological development, such as personality. They are some who believe that this aspect is genetic and some who say that it is formed depending on each persons environment. The first one to use this term was the english polymathician Francis Galton. Galton focused in the influence of environment and heriedity in social careers. His work was based in his conclusions from the book "The Origin of The Species" written by his cousin Charles Darwin. The debate covers topics such as personality, intelligence, behaviour, athletical abilities, sexual orientation, and career vocation. Generally many people think that both ideas complement each other, and that both are big factors of someones psychological development. As well they are other ones who extremely defend either nature or nurture side. I personally believe and agree with those who think that the two main components of this theory can exixst at the same time. Experiences are the major factor of personality and they somehow complement with genes.

Personality Disorders

The following are different personality disorders with their basic chracteristics.
  • Border Line: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by persistent instability in behavior, moods, interpersonal relationships, and self-image . The feeling of unsecurity often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity.
  • Schizotypal: It is a condition characterized by acute discomfort with, and reduced capacity for, close relationships as well as by cognitive or perceptual distortions and eccentricities of behavior. This disorder is only diagnosed when these behaviors become persistent and very disabling or distressing.
  • Paranoid: PPD is a type of psychological personality disorder characterized by an extreme and exagerated level of distrust and suspicion of others. Paranoid personalities are generally difficult to get along with, and their combative and distrustful nature often elicits hostility in others.
  • Narcissistic: This personality and mental disorder in which people have an inflated sense of their own importance and a deep need for admiration, makes people believe they are superior to others and have little regard for others feelings. But behind this mask of ultra-confidence lies a fragile self-esteem, vulnerable to the slightest criticism.
  • Histrionic: It is a disorder in which people  have intense, unstable emotions and distorted self-images. For people with histrionic personality disorder, their self-esteem depends on the approval of others and does not arise from a true feeling of self-worth.
  • Antisocial: Disorder in which someones way of thinking, perceiving situations and relating to others is working bad, having no regard for right and wrong. Antisocials may often violate the law and the rights of others, landing theirself in frequent trouble or conflict. In most of the cases they lie, behave violently, and may have drug and alcohol problems.
  • Obsessive-compulsive: Anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors (compulsions). Repetitive behaviors such as handwashing, counting, checking, or cleaning are often performed with the hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away.
  • Avoidant: Personality disorder  in which a person has a lifelong pattern of feeling extremely shy, inadequate, and sensitive to rejection.

Custom Keirsey Temperament Report for: Juan Fernando Gomez

Your Keirsey Temperament Sorter Results indicates that your personality type is that of the

Idealists, as a temperament, are passionately concerned with personal growth and development. Idealists strive to discover who they are and how they can become their best possible self -- always this quest for self-knowledge and self-improvement drives their imagination. And they want to help others make the journey. Idealists are naturally drawn to working with people, and whether in education or counseling, in social services or personnel work, in journalism or the ministry, they are gifted at helping others find their way in life, often inspiring them to grow as individuals and to fulfill their potentials.

Idealists are sure that friendly cooperation is the best way for people to achieve their goals. Conflict and confrontation upset them because they seem to put up angry barriers between people. Idealists dream of creating harmonious, even caring personal relations, and they have a unique talent for helping people get along with each other and work together for the good of all. Such interpersonal harmony might be a romantic ideal, but then Idealists are incurable romantics who prefer to focus on what might be, rather than what is. The real, practical world is only a starting place for Idealists; they believe that life is filled with possibilities waiting to be realized, rich with meanings calling out to be understood. This idea of a mystical or spiritual dimension to life, the "not visible" or the "not yet" that can only be known through intuition or by a leap of faith, is far more important to Idealists than the world of material things.

Highly ethical in their actions, Idealists hold themselves to a strict standard of personal integrity. They must be true to themselves and to others, and they can be quite hard on themselves when they are dishonest, or when they are false or insincere. More often, however, Idealists are the very soul of kindness. Particularly in their personal relationships, Idealists are without question filled with love and good will. They believe in giving of themselves to help others; they cherish a few warm, sensitive friendships; they strive for a special rapport with their children; and in marriage they wish to find a "soulmate," someone with whom they can bond emotionally and spiritually, sharing their deepest feelings and their complex inner worlds.

Idealists are relatively rare, making up no more than 15 to 20 percent of the population. But their ability to inspire people with their enthusiasm and their idealism has given them influence far beyond their numbers.

Idealists at Work

Idealists, as a temperament, are passionately concerned with personal growth and development. They are naturally drawn to working with people and are gifted with helping others find their way in life, often inspiring them to grow as individuals and to fulfill their potential both on, and off, the job.

Your attention is naturally drawn to the individual and collective needs, desires, and experiences of people in your environment. In your ideal job, you would be able to use your inner beliefs as a guide for empowering others. Though you are comfortable with leadership, you don’t like arbitrary hierarchies. You care deeply about people as people, and often feel that maintaining official role boundaries interferes unnecessarily with both communication and progress.

The four types of Idealists are:

Champion (ENFP)
Healer (INFP)
Teacher (ENFJ)
Counselor (INFJ)

Darwin and the origin of the species journal

Charles Darwin was an english scientist borned in 1809. He studied the nature and wrote his conclusions in his famouse book "The origins of species by means of natural selection". He died at the age of 72 in 1882. After 5 years of voyage he got really inteterest in animals, and after studying them he concluded that we all are a result of an evolution and an adaptation to our environment.
His theory of natural selection basically express his main conclusion after all his experiences which is that spicies develope depending on their environment  and after time they start to evolve for satifying their needs. All these findings were really useful for understanding universe and continue explainig other things about life, but these advanced ideas were not well apreciated by the conservative and extremely religious society of those times, making his theory rejected and unpopular. The previous fact, plus his marriage problems, and his daughter bad health conditions made Darwin feel anguish for developing his work. Charles Darwin was a polemic scientist for having ideas and publishing works that in the moment were against the church, but all his theories were usefull for the development of science and understanding of world.

A class divided journal

Aproximately 40 years ago Jane Elliot, a third grade teacher, made an experiment for teaching her students what racism consist of. She divided her class in two groups; blue-eyed  and brown eye children. The first day Mrs. Elliot treat really well  blue-eyeds, making the other group feel discriminated. Next day she did the same but with the other group. Results reflected that discriminated kids worked with no motivation, took longer time doing their work, and had bad results, while the other ones work with more motivation. Also some kids used the eye color as an insult.
The teacher used eye colors for dividing the class, because first of all people in her room had not other kind of different physical characteristic as skin color, and second of all because eye color is physical characteristic not so visible and important, but at the same time that you can not change, taking into account that she was working with kids. This experiment was really usefull not only for looking at the result, but also because children learned a lot of why perjudice and discrimination are bad. It is important to clarify that perjudice and discrimination are not the same thing. Perjudiece is a pre-judment you make of something or someone just taking into account its physicall or most recognizable aspect, ignoring all the good things that can be beyond that. Discrimanition refers to noting and making big and bad the differences between someone or something. Making this kind of experimets is important for understanding human racist actions and for teaching children the bad things of racism. I found really interesting the fact that when kids were bad treated they believed they were stupid and nothing, just because of their eye color, and that was refected in their test results and academic development. Motivation is really important for having a pleasant life.

What causes racism?

Accordingt to Dictionary.com racism is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. Trough many years people have been asking and trying to find out why some persons have a racial attitude towards others. It is true that humans are always trying to survive, and that for doing it they prefer to be sorrounded by persons who look physically similar or familiar to them, but this is not actually a major cause of this social problem. The ideals kids are raised with, the influence of parents, familiars, friends, tv programes, radio, news, movies, books, and the unfamiliriaty with other ethcnic groups are a primary causes of racism. To the before list can be added the fact that naturally a big part of the population is selfish and comformist, and also believe a lot in their historical background, sometimes making the mistake of learning from errors committed the past. Racism is a bad and intolerant practice natural of human beings and caused by different things.
